How You Can Avoid Unhealthy Eating While Traveling This Holiday Season Part II

Last time, I gave you three tips that can help you make healthy food choices while traveling this holiday season.  You can read those tips here.

In Part II, I have three more great tips for you.

TIP #4: If you don’t work out that day, stay away from simple carbs

Simple carbs like bread, pasta, rice, pastries, chips, processed foods, desserts, and sodas, for example, turn to sugar and store as fat almost immediately.

However, if you have exercised and you consume a simple carb, your body will process that food slower and more in your favor than if you didn’t exercise.

Make sure your exercise is as intense as possible and if you do partake, do so within a few hours of exercise.

TIP #5: Go ahead… Indulge a little!

If I had to guess, I bet you like this tip more than the previous…

You may be traveling to a family member’s home where your sister made her “famous” homemade dessert that she only makes once a year.

I say, “Go ahead!”

Maybe you’re traveling to a new city and there’s a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try.

I say, “By all means!”

BUT, I also say, “Prepare for this indulgence ahead of time,” meaning, exercise and eat extra healthy that day.

Both your mind and body will thank you.

TIP #6: Have a plan when you get back

Just as it can be hard to get back to your day job after vacation, the same can be true for getting back to work on your health.

Have some commitments in place for you when you get back, like storing some healthy meals you’ve prepared in the freezer before you leave so that you just have to defrost and heat when you get home, or committing to go grocery shopping right when you get home to stock up on healthy foods.

And finally, please remember, just like you shouldn’t detox or crash diet before your trip, the same goes when you return home. Simply go back to a healthy eating routine.

So there you have it. With a little planning and committing, you can enjoy your trip and some of your favorite (and perhaps not as healthy) foods as well. Miss the first 3 tips? Read them here.

Which tip did you find most helpful?

Or, is there a tip you’d like to add that works for you?

It’s your turn to take care of you,

I think that one of the travel tips that serves me best is to bring and/or buy fresh fruit and veggies. I don’t eat many carbs while at home and certainly won’t while away, especially while visiting family. When visiting different family members last year I made stops at the local markets to buy food that is healthy for me, even though some relatives didn’t like it. I no longer eat to please others at all!
