Life is a Script and You are the Writer

This past week, I sat in the doctor’s office with my partner as she waited to go in for a regular check-up. I sat there scanning the waiting room and seeing a few pregnant women there for a check-up. I thought about my own mom going to the doctor’s office when she was pregnant and eventually to the hospital to give birth to me. I contemplated the exact time I was born, breathed oxygen into my small lungs, and how at that moment, my life on Earth began and so did Chapter 1 of my story.

It reminded me of a saying that one of my mentors Todd Durkin lives by: “Live a life worth telling a story about.

I thought about how from the time we are born, our own unique story begins. At first, we are helpless and need someone to take care of our every need. Then we get older and find ourselves influenced by the authorities in our life about who to be, how to act, what to wear, what to say, what not to say, and possibly what to believe or not believe.

As we enter the high school and college ages, we begin to think about what we might want to major in in college, or maybe we choose to get a job instead, or possibly travel the world. We start asking ourselves questions about life and what career path we want to enter, who we want to be, how we want to act, how we want to serve others, and how to align ourselves with our passion and purpose.

And finally, we enter adulthood where some have already figured out a lot about themselves, possibly have found a life partner, maybe have children, and maybe even land their dream job. At the same time there are others who search for years and sometimes decades trying to figure out direction and purpose.

Throughout my own journey, I have learned that life is a script and you are the writer of your own life. I believe in living a life of passion and purpose. One can have many different passions and purposes and while some figure it out very quickly, others take longer to find it. There is one thing that is certain, however, and that is that we each possess talents, abilities, and strengths that are unique and special. We each have a combination of gifts that we can use to make a difference in our short lifetime.

The last 14 years of my own life have been in the fitness industry and over those years I have experienced my own transitions as I continue to figure out who I am, what my passions are, and what my purpose in life is. I am going to share about my journey these past 14 years in my next blog. I hope you stay tuned to read it.

Until then, I encourage you to continue to learn about yourself, keep asking questions, keep searching for answers, and continue to surround yourself with people who care about you and support you in your journey. And lastly, remember that you can’t change the past; you can only look ahead and look within as you write your own unique script every moment and begin to live a life worth telling a story about.

To be continued next week…
