You’re Not Getting Older…

P50sThis past summer at a blogging conference for women, “BlogHer,” I met a fascinating woman named Anne Boyd. Her blog is called “Am I Vintage Yet?” After meeting her, I started following her blog and have absolutely enjoyed reading it each week.

Earlier this week, I had a chance to interview Anne on my radio show, “Phenomenal 50’s.” If you didn’t catch my show, here’s a little bit of what we talked about.

Anne, in creating the title of your blog, why did you choose the word “Vintage?” What does “Vintage” mean to you?

When we think of vintage we think of something of high quality, is classic looking, and that we learn to appreciate more as time has passed. Like a fine vintage wine, women come into their own and realize their value more as they age. They now have the courage, experience, and wisdom to become the person they were supposed to be.

What do you write about in “Am I Vintage Yet?”

I cover many areas from Health and Relationships to Goal setting. I even profile dynamic women, women who are doing great things that inspire us and that we may look up to as role models.

Why is health so important for a Vintage woman?

Health is the foundation of everything. If you don’t have your health, nothing else even matters. Ask anyone who’s sick. At midlife, many are taking care of parents and put their health secondary. We only have one life and one body. If we don’t treat it right, it’s not going to take us anywhere.

Anne, how do you stay healthy yourself?

I follow an 80/20 rule, that is, 80% of the time I eat healthy and 20% of the time I enjoys other foods, like a slice of red velvet cake with ice cream. I also stay healthy by working out 5-6 days per week. I like to bike, swim, and I love lifting weights because I like to feel strong. It’s important to make sure your body is strong enough to support everything you want to do.

How does staying fit help support the life you want to live?

I plan on living to 108 years old in a healthy body so I don’t have to give up the things I love doing like swimming and hiking. I also plan on taking more distance biking trips, a walking vacation in Europe, and in this next year, I plan on visiting Alaska and Cuba.

At the end of our interview, Anne left listeners with a final thought based on the old Clairol commercial, “Remember ladies, you’re not getting older, you’re getting better.

Great interview with a lot of wonderful advice. I especially like the 80/20 rule – no deprivation gives you an incentive to stay on track, knowing that you don’t have to give up everything you love.
